Project Details and Impact

Project Overview

  • Goal: Enhance the operational capacity of Malaysia’s Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) in using drones and satellite imagery for maritime surveillance.
  • Duration: 2024
  • Commissioning Party: United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR)
  • Beneficiaries: Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency
  • Status: Partially finished

Why it Matters

Malaysia is strategically positioned along one of the world’s most important maritime trade routes. As such, ensuring the security of its waters is of utmost importance. With growing concerns over illegal activities such as piracy, smuggling, and illegal fishing, enhancing surveillance capabilities is crucial for protecting Malaysia’s coastlines and the safety of international shipping. The GS-Foundation’s project, commissioned by UNITAR, is equipping the MMEA with the latest drone technologies and satellite imagery analysis. That enables faster and more accurate responses to maritime threats.

Our Activities

  • Special Intervention Drone Operations Training: Training MMEA personnel in both basic and advanced drone operations to improve maritime surveillance and security along Malaysia’s coastline.
  • Satellite Image Analysis Training: Empowering MMEA to analyze satellite images effectively, allowing for early detection of potential maritime threats and more efficient surveillance.

Goals and Impact

This project aims to create a modern, technology-driven maritime security force that can effectively manage the increasing challenges posed by threats in Malaysia’s waters. Through the combination of drone operations and satellite imagery analysis, the GS-Foundation is helping the MMEimprove its ability to respond to illegal activities and safeguard one of the world’s busiest maritime trade routes. By improving maritime surveillance, the project contributes directly to Malaysia’s long-term security, resilience, and its role in global trade and international cooperation.
