This summer, the GS-Foundation was featured on Nigeria’s 6 PM Evening News, broadcast by the Nigerian Television Authority (short: NTA), which runs the largest television network in Nigeria with stations in several parts of the country. The segment highlighted our Leadership and Management Programme, a cornerstone of Nigeria’s ongoing police reform.
Since 2021, the GS-Foundation has been working in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and with funding from the German Federal Foreign Office to strengthen leadership capacity within the Nigeria Police Force. The programme equips senior officers with practical tools for strategic planning, effective management, and values-based decision-making.
“We have now been here for four years to provide input for the minds of those leading the Nigeria Police Force,” says Matthias Seeger, Head of Project at the GS-Foundation.
Initially designed for officers at the rank of Assistant Commissioner and above, the course was expanded this year to include Chief Superintendents, ensuring a wider leadership base and empowering the next generation of decision-makers.The certificate awarded at the end of the Leadership & Management Training programme provides participants with a ‘building block’ for promotion to senior management at the NPF. The first promotions from CSP to Assistant Commissioner Police (ACP) have already taken place.
By embedding this leadership training within the broader reform agenda, the GS -Foundation underscores a key principle: lasting change comes not only from new structures or laws, but from the people who put them into practice – with courage, responsibility, and a clear focus on serving their communities.
