Strengthening School Safety in Ukraine: GS-Foundation Visits Educational Institution in the Khmelnytskyi Region

A GS-Foundation delegation recently visited a gymnasium in Starokostiantyniv, Khmelnytskyi region, where walk-through and handheld metal detectors delivered through a GS-Foundation-supported project have been installed and are now in daily use.

The delegation was accompanied by Ihor Yurchak, Head of the Educational Security Service (ESS) of the Main Directorate of the National Police of Ukraine in the Khmelnytskyi region, and Victor Gupta, Gender Advisor to the Swedish Police Support Project in Chisinau. During the visit, the delegation met with the ESS inspector assigned to the school and the school principal.

Security Equipment Supporting Daily Operations

The school principal and the ESS inspector provided an overview of how the installed equipment is used as part of everyday security procedures. They explained that the walk-through and handheld metal detectors support the work of ESS officers by enabling more efficient and effective security screening within the school environment.

The presence of ESS inspectors in schools plays an important role in ensuring a safe educational environment. Their responsibilities extend beyond physical security, as they are trained to identify and respond to both physical and potential psychological threats.

The installed metal detectors have become an important tool in their daily work. As one ESS officer explained, “Your scanners make our life much easier,” highlighting the practical value of the equipment provided through the project. The technology enables officers to carry out security checks more efficiently while allowing them to focus on their wider role of supporting students and maintaining a secure learning environment.

Building Trust with Students

Discussions during the visit also highlighted the unique role ESS officers play within the school community. School police officers explained that students actively approach them to talk about their everyday lives and the challenges they face.

At a time when many families continue to experience exceptional strain as a result of the ongoing war, having trusted and approachable officers within schools is particularly important. These relationships help provide students with reassurance, support, and a reliable point of contact when needed.

Providing Stability in Challenging Circumstances

The school principal emphasised that, despite operating in a high-risk area, the school is doing everything possible to provide children and young people with a sense of normality and continuity in their daily lives.

Creating an environment where students can continue learning safely remains a priority for the school, the Educational Security Service, and all partners involved in supporting educational institutions across Ukraine.

Looking Ahead

The visit provided valuable insights into the effectiveness of the delivered equipment and its contribution to strengthening security measures in educational institutions. It also helped identify practical needs and potential areas for further support.

GS-Foundation remains committed to working alongside local and international partners to enhance the safety, wellbeing, and resilience of students, teachers, and school communities throughout Ukraine.
