GS-Foundation Successfully Concludes Women’s Leadership Certificate Course in Nigeria

From 29 June to 10 July 2026, the GS-Foundation successfully delivered the Women’s Leadership Certificate Course in Abuja, Nigeria. Implemented on behalf of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and funded by the German Government, the programme brought together 20 senior female officers of the Nigeria Police Force to strengthen their leadership competencies and promote professional exchange.

Strengthening leadership for organisational change

Over the course of two intensive weeks, participants explored a broad range of leadership topics, including strategic leadership, communication, negotiation, decision-making, mentoring and leading organisational change. The highly interactive programme combined expert input with practical exercises, group discussions, presentations and peer learning, providing participants with valuable tools to further develop their leadership capabilities within the Nigeria Police Force.

The course was facilitated by Christiane Burrell of the GS-Foundation and Dr. Nkiruka Stella Okonkwo of the LANOF Foundation, whose extensive experience and interactive approach created an engaging learning environment throughout the programme.

Graduation ceremony marks successful completion

The programme concluded with a graduation ceremony celebrating the participants’ achievements. Certificates were presented by the Deputy Inspector-General of Police responsible for Training and Development together with Uwe Heller, representing the GS-Foundation.

The successful completion of the course reflects the participants’ dedication and commitment to advancing their leadership skills and contributing to the continued development of policing in Nigeria.

Promoting women’s leadership in the security sector

The Women’s Leadership Certificate Course also attracted attention beyond the training venue. Coverage in the Nigerian news media underlined the growing recognition of the importance of women’s leadership in policing and the wider security sector.

Investing in female leaders is an important contribution to building inclusive, resilient and effective security institutions. By strengthening leadership capacities and creating opportunities for professional exchange, programmes such as this support long-term institutional development and sustainable reform processes.

A joint effort for sustainable impact

The GS-Foundation extends its sincere thanks to the Nigeria Police Force, UNDP, the German Government, the LANOF Foundation, all facilitators and partners for their excellent cooperation and commitment throughout the programme.
